Forty years of Colorado light

Acrylic painting of sunset light across canyon mesas

Sorting through four decades of Bob’s work in one summer is a strange education. You can watch a hand settle. The early pieces — the snowbound homestead, the winter camp on the plains — are careful, almost reverent about detail. The later mountain canvases loosen up: fewer strokes, more air, more confidence about what to leave out.

What never changes is the light. Bob paints Colorado light specifically: the cold blue that sits in snow shadow at altitude, the gold that only lasts twenty minutes on the mesas, the flat white haze of a plains afternoon. If you have driven those roads you recognise it immediately.

Many of these images existed only as a small number of prints made decades ago, some of them still in their original mats. Where the paper has held up, we are reissuing them signed and numbered. Where it has not, we are working from the originals.

If there is a piece you remember from a wall somewhere and cannot find here, write to us. The archive is deeper than what is currently in the gallery, and part of the joy of this project is being asked.
